Family violence may involve violence against an intimate partner, children, parents, or the elderly and more vulnerable individuals of our community. Violence can take a number of forms, including physical, verbal, emotional, economic, religious, reproductive, and sexual abuse. Child abuse may include physically, sexually, or mentally injuring a child either with intent or through neglect.

Family violence occurs between partners of all genders when in the context of forcing one’s will over another. Family violence may range from harassment to homicide. Most often the violence is a pattern of behavior that escalates over time in frequency and severity. The escalation is not always limited to intimate partners, and can cause danger for the entire family and the community. After our county experienced the 2015 mass shooting at Umpqua Community College, it is this Task Force’s intent to ultimately prevent such events in the future and with 54% of mass shootings having prior domestic violence, we are committed to the prevention of all types of violence.

The Task Force on Family Violence is committed to a community response of violence prevention. The Task Force recognizes that all aspects of our community are able to engage in a collaborative differential response in this commitment. Safety is our priority, for individuals, families, institutions, and communities. The Task Force is committed to empowering our community in addressing violence and the limiting cultural practices, beliefs, and historical traumas that contribute to familial violence.

The Task Force recognizes that inequities and disparities exist within our rural Douglas County communities and their existence can inform violence. Our commitment is in acknowledging this disproportionality, and engaging in a continual collaborative effort in eliminating these outcomes. Though these challenges still exist with many unmet needs throughout our area, we recognize the value of continuing in our united efforts, building upon our strengths and resiliency to empower our community in the prevention of violence.
